Data and Software Recovery from Inaccessible or Damaged Hard Drives
Data can be lost from a hard drive or floppy disk for many reasons. The worst scenario is an inaccessible or damaged hard drive. If you hear an unfamiliar clicking sound coming from your computer and you are having problems with accessing information on your hard drive, then you should shut down your system in the normal manner as soon as possible. The clicking sound is usually due to the read/write head coming into contact with the spinning platter of the hard drive. This can destroy the surface of the spinning platter and cause data to be lost. If the computer is shut down in time, then PCD technicians can recover your data from the damaged hard drive, and have it transferred to a new hard drive, floppy disk, or CD-ROM.
The two most common problems that we see are accidental deleting of important system files or a virus that has been either downloaded from the Internet or transferred onto the hard drive from a floppy disk. In most cases, the deleted files can be either reloaded or recovered from the drive by using Hexadecimal Editing. However, no file or data is recoverable if the file has been overwritten by another program. So it is very important to stop using your computer immediately if you realize something has been deleted. Bring the drive in question to PCD to see if the file is recoverable.
Viruses that infiltrate computers can usually be found attached to certain files that are required for the correct operation of either application software or the system files that help to keep the computer to run. The affected files can be deleted, overwritten, or edited to remove the offending data. If a computer has been infected with a ‘Trojan Horse Virus’ also known as a ‘back door virus’, this will allow other computer users on the Internet to see and manipulate your files without your knowledge, often until it is too late. If a hard drive has been deliberately formatted or erased through one of these back door viruses, then we are still able to recover the data so long as no other data has been written to the drive.
Data Recovery from Memory Sticks and Digital Cameras
Digital images and data can be recovered from damaged cameras and memory sticks. However, once damaged, use of these devices should be stopped immediately and no more images should be taken or data transferred to the device - the previous images or data could be overwritten. Formatted memory and formatted cameras are usually recoverable as long as little or no data is overwritten.
All the data on Hard Drives, Floppy Disks, Memory Sticks, USB Devices, Tapes. Cameras etc. that are shipped to PCD Inc. are kept confidential. Any data in which we can not recover is not charged. Turn-around time for shipping the recovered data back to you is usually 24 hours.
